Some Trends in the Use of Mobile Phones

In 1990, there were 21.1 cell phone users per 1000 people. That number grew to 683 per 1000 in 2005. It is projected that by 2010, almost everyone will have a cell phone, or 946 out of every 1000 people. Cell usage is even more widespread in Western Europe. In 2005, they had 930 cell phone users per 1000 people, and by 2010, that is projected to grow to 1008. Yes, more phones than people! One of the biggest markets for cell phones now is teenagers. If you have a teen or tween, you may want to take a look at the following usage trends.

People have been finding it difficult to carry a digital camera, a handy camera, an mp3 player and a mobile phone where ever they go. This has been well understood by the mobile phone manufactures. In order to satisfy the customers and to attract more customers the first step taken in the development trend was the integration of the camera, video camera and mp3 in a mobile phone. Once this was done the next step was to develop these features.

Today cell phones aren’t just about communications they are also about style! If you don’t believe it then think of all the trendsetters in Hollywood and any recent pictures you have seen of them. More than likely the pictures show them talking on their cell phone or PDA. You may have noticed there are cellular phone accessories in use as well that make the phone even more stylish. Luckily, celebrities aren’t the only ones who can use cellular phones as fashion statements, you can too! There are plenty of cheap cell phone accessories you can find on the Internet, in mall kiosks, as well as from street vendors that will allow you to decorate your cell phone to make it ultra stylish.

The HTC or High Tech Computer Corp is one of the fastest growing mobile phone company of the world. The company is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. The firm was founded in 1997 and it presently designs and manufactures feature rich smart phones and personal digital assistant (PDA) devices. The company has launched a number of models of handsets in past few years. Some of the highly popular models of the company include HTC Advantage X7500, HTC Shift, HTC Touch and HTC HYC TyTN.

This involves sitting at your computer or mobile phone and interacting with others. Social networks are creeping into companies and many have embraced Twitter within their own organizations. Others have created home-grown internal social networks. In addition to instant messages (IM) and chats, these are other avenues for people to get information and answers to questions quickly.

With smart phone usage rising steadily both in the U.S. and worldwide there's been a lot of buzz about mobile video lately. Whether they're viewing graphics, playing games, watching movies or short snippets of shows, cell phone users are gravitating to a medium that most marketers have yet to tap.

According to Nielsen's Three Screen Report for the first quarter of 2009, the 13.4 million Americans (up 52 percent from 2008) who watch videos on their phones view an average of 3-1/2 hours of mobile video every month. The research firm says the growth stems from increased mobile content and the rise of the mobile web as a viewing option.

Most mobile phone users across the globe are dependent on the GSM mobile (Global System for Mobile communications) network rather than CDMA mobile (Code division Multiple Access) network; this will pave the way for wireless communication other than calling facility. Services like e-mailing facility, instant messaging, video calling and multi-media messaging are pricey to use as the providers charge a substantial sum for availing these non-voice based mobile commuting services. But providers in near future will reduce the cost of their services, as it will be replaced by advertiser's revenue.

Where does a cell phone trend come from? As cellular technology has evolved beyond a simple voice call and with more and more multimedia devices appearing on the market everyday it seems that the the cellular industry could easily shift towards self-generated consumer content. I don't believe that all the companies that manufacture the hardware and create applications along with all these 'consumer wireless advocacy' groups and analysts have any idea what the next big cell phone trend will be. And why don't they? Because in the end it always comes down to politics and not the best interest of the consumer. Kind of like the whole 700 mhZ regulation issue going with Google and Verizon. On Judgment Day Google 'didn't win', but neither did Verizon. The decision put political interests up front and not consumer interests. So I vote consumers need to start putting their own interests first.

The concept of a smart phone is surely taking its title seriously. The question that consumers have is which one should they buy, and it has some consumers actually waiting now for the next new great thing to hit good market.

It appears that soon we will have smart phones that will alert you to someone with a similar profile if they are in your vicinity. Since both individuals will have GPS they will know where you are. Your phone will ring and alert you that there is someone with your similar profile nearby, and ask you if you'd like to meet them; Yes or No? They too will be alerted with the same question.

Solve a problem and do it NOW. Oddly enough we are in this window now where what was old is new again, due to the power of the Internet and the policies and laws are not all set in stone (but they are getting there). There are lots of companies in the wireless space who created solutions back in the day that have now become a major cell phone trend, yet it seems those companies never figured out how to leverage the marketing tools out there to even become a blip on the radar. Take for instance, Calypso Wireless, a Miami Lakes, Florida based company.

iPhone users are leading the charge: Equipped with a YouTube app right on its welcome screen, the iPhone put mobile video on the map when it made its debut in 2008. With its original model now priced at $99, expect the iPhone to boost the number of mobile video users even further. "By the holiday season we expect to see a lot more consumers being able to view videos on their cell phones," says Eyal Yechezkell, CEO at New York-based Predicto Mobile, which touts itself as the largest "paid" mobile community.
